Cooling the baby |
A very small size implies confinement, and global
heating. The biggest power-eater is the CPU. For this reason,
we have selected a low-power CPU,
an Intel Celeron which
consumes about 10W only.
Via's Cyrix III are announced to keep cool even without
a fan, but preliminary tests show them as very poor in
performance.
Moreover, due to limited space, the fan and heatsink are
really reduced, which cannot help. The box will have to
be drilled to have a maximum number of holes, necessary
fans, and the power supply must have maximum efficiency.
Today's switching power supply achieve more than 90%
efficiency which is quite acceptable.
